Grover on the left. Cool Robot on the right. |
The Cool Robot is a solar power, autonomous robot that was developed by a team of students at Dartmouth Thayer School in conjunction with Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). In 2005 the Cool Robot was tested at Greenland Summit. The last two years have been spent in implementing the robot and redesigning its solar panel box. Now it is time to test Cool Robot and its improvement as it makes it way back to Greenland for its 2nd visit.

Photo Shoot with Grover
We got the robot up and running with the solar panels on! We were able to drive the robot right out the bay door for its photo shoot with Grover. It drove with no problems except when the serial to USB cable I was using got to cold and the computer could not long recognize it, so we were no longer able to communicate with the robot. Lucky the robot was stopped when that happened and I had another one, so that we could drive safely back. We were also able to receive GPS coordinates. Tomorrow the solar panels will come off so that we can work on getting the power system up and running.
